No matter how big our purse may be, there
are certain items we always find a way to carry with us.
These things are not necessarily essential for actual living, but
they sure as hell make life a lot easier. We keep them near because
they have become important to us, they represent our conveniences,
successes, and abilities. Without them, we can feel like something is
missing or that we are not capable of completing our daily tasks.
When we translate these items into the
metaphysical realm of our mental space, we can easily see their value
as symbols. When we keep certain thoughts with us, we can enhance our
daily living experience and improve our confidence.
1)
Money – “I am valuable”
The most important thought we should keep with us
serves as a reminder that we are people of importance. Our feelings,
ideas, and desires are the currency by which we do business with
others, and our unique combination of attributes makes us a rare, and
thus valuable, commodity. When we remember that we have worth, we
remember that others cannot take from us for free. We don’t have to
give power to insults and abuses from others.
2) Keys – “With
the right tools, all things are open to me”
Keys can open our doors, start our cars, and even
unlock our sex handcuffs. They are tools which allow us to reach the
places we want to be. They symbolize the reality that all paths are
available, all doors can be opened, one must simply have the right
key. We may acquire our keys in any number of ways, or even fashion
them out of unexpected materials, but the fact remains that all we
need to reach our goal is the right tool.
3) Cell phone –
“I am not alone”
Sometimes we feel disconnected from others. Our
cellphones remind us that there is always a way to reach out for
companionship, and that there are any number of people available to
take our call. Very often, we are afraid to initiate contact with
someone we only know in a limited context, but when our desire for
belonging outweighs our fear of rejection, we are usually pleasantly
surprised by the compassion of our fellow humans.
4) Makeup – “I
have the power to change”
Lip gloss, powder, glitter eyeshadow…regardless
of the product du jour, these items remind us that we have the power
to change. We don’t have to be the same person as yesterday, and we
are in control of what we see in the mirror.
5) Snack – “I
must feed my soul”
This last item doesn’t always make it into the
tiny clutch we take on our night out, but one can usually find a
snack or two tucked away in our backpacks and desk drawers – places
we are close to on a daily basis. Our mental snacks provide us with
spiritual nourishment and remind us to take a moment to meditate and
reflect.
Look at art. Read an inspiring quote. Blast your
favorite song, or just listen to the silence of the sound inside your
head. Whatever your soul enjoys, remember to feed it on a regular
basis in order to stay spiritually full.
Not all women keep the same items in their purses,
of course. And some women wouldn’t be caught dead without such and
such thing…What do you keep in your bag? What does it
symbolize?
